Clay has had great professional success at every step in his journey, most recently as a classroom teacher he was recognized by his peers and North Carolina Department of Instruction as a finalist in the search for the North Carolina’s Teacher of the Year. He had the opportunity to build his own curriculum for the 8th grade team in Durham he was a part of. Using a Project Based Learning model, Clay was tasked with bringing the content of all classes and create semester long application projects that focused on real local issues and brought the problems facing the community into the classroom. Clay is very excited to bring this approach to the lives of Academy students.
Clay can often be found with a our students playing any number of stringed instruments, digging in the dirt or riding his bike. Clay’s favorite thing, however, is spending time with his wife and little girl Annie. Whether it is in the wilds of downtown Asheville or on an adventure in the wilderness of Western North Carolina Clay loves seeing our beautiful area reflected in the joy of seeing his daughter experience our world for the first time.
